At the turn of the year from 2017 to 2018, maconda consultants assisted United Chocolate GmbH and performed a commercial due diligence assessment on taking over Argenta, a successful chocolate producer from Saxony-Anhalt. The experienced consultants from Cologne contributed to creating a medium-sized chocolate group. maconda brought its extensive expertise in food and sweets, in retail as well as in the private label and sales promotion business.
Argenta has existed since 1935 and manufactures innovative chocolate specialties and chocolate-based seasonal products. Its clients comprise mainly leading food retail and discount chains. The company’s products are sold in part under the own Argenta brand and in part under private label. Argenta benefits from its good reputation, its regionally established products as well as innovative products and packaging that deliver a regular supply of new offerings to the market.
The product range covers traditionally rooted products that are well-known in East Germany, such as “Brockensplitter”, and seasonally limited sales campaigns. Argenta also sells high-quality pralines in attractive packaging, the like of which can only be found at brand companies with a higher price point.
The commercial due diligence assessment included a targeted analysis of Argenta’s business model, the relevant chocolate market and Argenta’s positioning in a very broad, opaque competitive landscape. The maconda experts scrutinised aspects such as the broad client portfolio and the effects of fluctuations of raw-material prices and evaluated the company’s business plan.
