maconda supported Capvis, a leading Swiss holding company, in its acquisition of the riverboat tour specialist nicko tours. As the market leader for riverboat tours in the German-speaking countries, the nicko tours Group generated sales of € 115 million in 2012, serving approximately 80,000 passengers. With 33 ships, the company has the largest fleet of river cruise ships and the most diverse range of offers in all of Europe. Operations at nicko tours also cover the entire value creation chain – from compiling trips and handling bookings to implementing the tours on their own ships.
As part of its commercial due diligence work, maconda analyzed the specialized tour operator’s positioning at its most important destinations. To accomplish this, maconda used its expertise to compile comprehensive analyses of the company’s capacities as well as the performance and quality of its offers. We assessed the pricing and bundling strategy of both nicko tours and its main competitors, while also performing a comprehensive comparison of the riverboat fleets using our own set of fleet KPIs. These analyses, in combination with nearly 100 interviews with market experts, specialized tour operators, travel agencies, ship brokers and shipyards, and the resulting insights provided our client with a comprehensive overview into nicko tours as well its market and competitive environment at key destinations.
