maconda advises Capvis on an acquisition in the tourism sector

2012 was a successful year for us, with numerous completed transactions in our Commercial Transaction Services business area, various business development mandates and projects for the operational preparation of company sales. Once again, 2013 is off to a promising start. Thus, the maconda team is particularly pleased to have successfully accompanied one of the few large transactions in the tourism industry. Due to its many years of experience in this segment and in consumer-oriented services and products, maconda was able to recommend itself here as a competent partner for commercial due diligence.
maconda supported Capvis, the leading Swiss investment company, in the acquisition of the specialist for river cruises, nicko tours. As the market leader for river tours in German-speaking countries, the nicko tours Group generated sales of 115 million euros in 2012 with around 80,000 passengers. With its 33 ships, the company has the largest river cruise fleet with the broadest offering in Europe. nicko tours covers the entire value chain, from putting together a trip to booking it and operating it on its own ships.
As part of the commercial due diligence, maconda analyzed, among other aspects, the positioning of the specialized tour operator in all important destinations. To this end, maconda contributed its expertise to, for instance, extensive analyses of the capacities offered, the level of service and quality in connection with the pricing or bundling strategy of the company and its main competitors. In addition, maconda conducted a comprehensive comparison of the river cruise fleets using specially designed fleet KPI’s. In combination with nearly 100 interviews with market experts, specialized tour operators and travel agents as well as ship brokers and shipyards, the insights gained in this way contributed significantly to providing our client gaining an understanding of nicko tours’ business as well as the market and competitive environment by destination.
