maconda supports Odewald KMU in its stake acquisition in ARTUS, a leading restoration specialist for water and fire damage

maconda News June 2019

With a comprehensive Commercial Due Diligence, maconda supported the Berlin-based mid-market investor Odewald KMU in its stake acquisition in ARTUS. ARTUS is one of the region’s leading full-service providers for water, fire and natural hazard damage in Lower Saxony and the neighbouring federal states and currently has seven branches – with more to come.

In recent years, the experienced maconda team has already worked repeatedly in the water and fire damage restoration sector, analysing and advising many providers of construction-adjacent trades and products, and has also dealt several times with products and services in passive and active fire protection. All of this provided an excellent basis, which is why Odewald KMU engaged the Cologne-based consultants for the Commercial Due Diligence on ARTUS from Langenhagen near Hanover.

The particular challenge here was to assess the future development of an industry dependent on external factors – and chance – and to understand the competitive landscape, which is regional and often strongly local in character. This required an in-depth analysis of the fragmented market, for which the maconda team compiled a wide range of data: the type and age of apartments in the relevant regions, the type, extent and frequency of damage, and much more. This data was intelligently linked with each other and with detailed ARTUS internal data, and substantiated and validated through insights from many targeted interviews in the market with insurers, loss adjusters, associations and other experts.

It was challenging to trace the order-award processes in detail: in the event of a loss, numerous parties are involved – insurers, external claims adjusters, experts, property managers, of course the hard-hit residents, and others. The decisions to be made are correspondingly complex, and ultimately each insurer proceeds differently. In numerous exploratory interviews, ARTUS’s position in the interplay with the many stakeholders was clearly identified, enabling a differentiated assessment of performance. A pragmatic assessment of growth prospects completed the work.
