maconda supports the LEO II Fund, exclusively advised by DUBAG Group, with a Vendor Commercial Review for the sale of Holzwerke Pfarrkirchen, a leading provider of premium timber construction products
maconda News January 2023
The Cologne-based consulting boutique maconda supported the LEO II Fund, exclusively advised by DUBAG Group, with a Vendor Commercial Review for the sale of Holzwerke Pfarrkirchen to the Munich-based DEBA Group. The company is a leading provider of premium timber construction products for structural purposes. The Cologne-based consultants, highly experienced in the construction industry, evaluated not only the market environment and positioning but also the supply chain and business drivers.
With an annual production capacity of 175,000 m³, Holzwerke Pfarrkirchen is among the leading timber processing companies in Europe. Various timber construction products for structural purposes are manufactured in Pfarrkirchen, Lower Bavaria, located between Passau and Munich. Customers include construction and carpentry companies, specialist timber retailers, and prefabricated house specialists.
“For the sales process, we were looking for a consultant who would dive deep into the subject matter immediately and who knows exactly what investors require. maconda delivered incredible work in a short time. Precise, fast, reliable, … simply extremely good. A reliable partner I can only recommend—even beyond M&A processes for analyses that help in day-to-day business,” commented Dr. Oliver Bensch, managing director of Holzwerke Pfarrkirchen, on maconda’s engagement.
The primary objective of the Vendor Commercial Review—the analysis of market, company, and strategy for the principal shareholder—was to provide potential investors with faster thematic access to timber construction products and to demonstrate the sustainability of the business. In developing the report, which serves as sales support, the Cologne-based consultants drew on their extensive experience with industrial goods and the construction industry, built up over many years.
The applications and advantages of various timber construction products were highlighted, such as structural solid timber (KVH), glued laminated timber (BSH), and cross-laminated timber (BSP or CLT). This was complemented by a detailed analysis of the many demand factors—ranging from construction activity and demand for prefabricated houses with their high timber requirements to the importance of timber as a building material and sustainable resource. Numerous discussions with sawmills, specialist timber retailers, specialist planners, and associations helped assess supply and demand, as did extensive research in relevant trade magazines on timber and construction. From this, the resulting effects on the future business with timber construction products were derived.
The procurement side and supply chain were also examined. The focus here was primarily on the availability and pricing of timber along the supply chain: forestry – (integrated) sawmills – timber processors – customers. Accordingly, the potential impacts of the Ukraine war on the sawn timber market were also investigated.
Looking to the future, a joint strategy workshop yielded valuable starting points for various strategic growth areas, in which implementation measures were also developed. We were able to examine one of these topics in greater depth as a follow-up engagement.
